Hidrostal UK Awarded Contract

01.09.2003

Hidrostal Limited, based in Newbury, Berkshire have been awarded a contract to supply pumps to transfer surface water runoff, which can contain traces of oil, aviation fuel, de-icer fluid etc, from the runway and car park at the new Terminal facility at Heathrow Terminal 5, to a downstream separator.

Selected by Black & Veatch Consulting, the company responsible for the design and management of the waste water collection and disposal at Terminal 5, Hidrostal will be supplying 3 x 90 kw immersible screw centrifugal pumps combined with the Hidrostal prerostal system and inverter drives.

The Hidrostal pumps were chosen primarily because of the low shear ability of the screw centrifugal impeller which ensures minimal emulsification of oils in the liquor, an essential aid to the downstream separation process. Also, because the Hidrostal screw centrifugal pump has a steep Q-H curve, the pump can handle a wide range of static heads with a smaller variance in pump output than most other centrifugal pumps, an important consideration with this application as the suction side water levels vary considerably because the deep shaft and pump station output is not to exceed the flow limitations of the separator.

The addition of the Hidrostal Prerotation system (a unique and simple flow matching and skimming system that utilises only static components installed in the sump) will ensure that the sump is kept clean and free from any floating debris.

The project is due for completion in October 2003.

Water is a precious resource, especially in Africa, and maintaining the infrastructure that delivers it to homes and businesses is a complex task. Pumping stations are the heart of this system, transferring huge volumes of water between reservoirs and water towers as well as across the wider network. Sulzer is using its local facilities to deliver planned refurbishments to 11 pumps sets as the first part of an essential maintenance plan.
